After much socialising and aperitif refills we sat at one long table and enjoyed a selection of entrées including pâté, rillettes, Greek style mushrooms, melon and “piemontaise” salad.
The cooking of the roast pig had started at 7.00am – an early start for both the caterer and our Vice-President – but by 1.30pm it was being lifted off the barbeque and prepared for serving. We were then all invited to help ourselves to the generous portions of roast pork with a port sauce, savoury beans and even some delicious cracking which was well received by our English members. Second and third helpings were subsequently passed around the table for anyone who had any space left.
By this time the temperature was rising and we were all very grateful for the lovely shade provided in the garden.
After the serving of a selection of cheese and delicious fruit tartelettes, a toast was made to absent friends, particularly our President who, due to her own birthday celebrations with family, was not able to be with us. We were, however, able to celebrate the birthday of another member present and her dessert was served with the appropriate birthday candle/firework and a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday.
A raffle with bottle prizes donated by members and guests and a special prize of an overnight stay at a hotel in Paris, completed the afternoon and also helped to raise ESU funds.
A gift for their garden was presented to Julie and Gilles and many thanks expressed to them for inviting us to their home for what had been a very relaxing and sociable meal in glorious sunshine. As members and guests finally drifted away, everyone said what a wonderful day they had enjoyed and requested it be repeated next year – committee please take note!
