A Visit to the Japanese Gardens

Patricia Curd

A total of twenty-two members and guests gathered together to enjoy a long leisurely summer afternoon on 25th July 2015.

Despite several of the party losing their bearings in Maulèvrier, nineteen members and friends arrived on time for what proved to be an excellent meal at the “Cheval Blanc” in St. Pierre des Echaubrognes. Some of those present then left and others joined the group for a visit to the Parc Oriental at Maulèvrier. In all eighteen members and guests toured the gardens.

Below are comments from two members who attended the event:

“A very pleasant drive took us out of our comfort area to enter into an adjacent department where we were presented with an enjoyable meal at Le Cheval Blanc in St Pierre des Echaubrognes. This included some interesting, tasty, well presented dishes.

Just a couple of kilometres up the road at Maulévrier we were able to enjoy a visit to the Parc Oriental. The Japanese gardens were beautiful and provided a further chance to chat with fellow members.” Paul Quigley

“Our ESU Loire Valley committee does a great job in maintaining my interest with their monthly meetings. However I had my doubts about the event organized for July: a meal at the “Cheval Blanc” - “The White Horse” being a ubiquitous English pub - and a visit to Japanese Gardens – in July?

At the Cheval Blanc we received an enthusiastic welcome from “la patronne” as we entered the restaurant where we were all accommodated on one long table. I tucked into an excellent meal accompanied by suitable French lubrication. I believe the majority of those present shared my opinion of the meal.

As for the Parc Oriental, my scepticism about “gardens” in general slowly turned into calm enthusiasm, as we wondered around in twos, threes or larger groups. My brain is teeming with superlative memories but I fear my pen is inadequate to give the visit true justice. I recommend an excursion to the Japanese Gardens to all who read this page.” John Curd
