An enjoyable afternoon was had by thirty ESU Loire Valley members at the Bois de Délice restaurant in Chemellier on Saturday, 24th January 2015. The afternoon began with our photographic competition which was won jointly by our Vice-Chairman, Julie Dufour, with a photo of the gardens of the Château d’Angers, and Dominique Derop, with a photo of landscaped gardens. The runners up were Julie again, with a view of the river Thouet, and Peter Morgan. with a painting of the fortress at Chinon. These four pictures will feature during 2015 on both our website and on Facebook.
During the meal Tim de Alwis set us a fiendish quiz to tax the little grey cells. The contest was fiercely contested but the winners were John Turnbull's team of six: John and Lynn Turnbull, Anne Latrille, Dominique Derop, and Sue and John Dunkerley.
A surprise came towards the end of the meal when Andrew, an American Rotary exchange student, produced a set of bagpipes and piped in a haggis as an acknowledgement of Sunday 25th being Burns Night.
The traditional toast to the haggis was given by John Barritt. with his best Scottish accent. This was fairly incomprehensible to the English so I don't know what the French thought of it! A sample of haggis was then served together with a tot of whisky. After more bagpipe music the afternoon finished with all present crossing hands in a circle and singing Auld Lang Syne.
Thanks must go to Tim for his quiz and to the committee members for organising such an enjoyable afternoon.
