Over the weekend of 17th, 18th and 19th November, ESU US held their annual general meeting in New Orleans. Patricia Curd, together with Lucia Dumont, Chairman of ESU France, were invited to join delegates from all over the US for the social events of the weekend, organised by the host branch, ESU New Orleans - report.

The 25th anniversary of the Bibliothèque Anglophone was celebrated with a gala dinner and evening of entertainment in the beautiful surroundings of the Salons de la Présidence at the Conseil Départmental - report.

Our November reunion was at the Hotel Saint Paul in Vivy. Forty-four members enjoyed a talk by Jean-Paul Merceron on the American presence in Anjou from July 1917 to July 1919, and on the relationship of the American soldiers with the local community - report.

On Saturday, 20th October, forty members and their guests met to listen to a talk by Susan Sandover. We settled down in anticipation of an interesting story and were not to be disappointed - report.

On Friday 5th October, twenty-one members and friends of the ESU Loire Valley assembled together in the car park of the “Club de Tir” in the woods above St.-Hilaire-St.-Florent to set out together for a walk in the forest - report.

The ESU Loire Valley chairman, Patricia Curd, had the honour of being a guest at the Liverpool and Merseyside Branch Centenary Celebrations which took place Friday 21st September 2018 in the spectacular surroundings of Liverpool Anglican Cathedral - report.

The 8th September 2018 was the date for our annual Treasure Hunt, kindly organised for us once again by member, Terence O’Hara. Eighteen participants drove into the meeting point at the Le Clerc car park in Brissac Quincé on a beautiful summer afternoon to be greeted by the organisers and to receive their maps and questionnaires - report.

Sixty members and friends met on Saturday 18th August for the traditional summer barbecue, which this year took place in the gardens of members Robert and Janice Priddle at the Château de Dampierre-Morains in Dampierre-sur-Loire to the east of Saumur - report.

For more than sixty of us fortunate enough to be there, it was unforgettable.  Under blue skies and in the beautiful and colourful garden of Chantal and Alain, with the flowers and trees and bushes all in full bloom, with the wine flowing freely as we greeted so many friends, what more could be better? - report.

It was a hot and sunny late June morning when thirty members and guests arrived at the restaurant "Le Bord du Lac" in Cholet. After a delicious meal ranging from salmon and foie gras to lamb shanks and sorbets it was time to leave our delightful spot and drive to the Museum of Art and History where we learned about the Vendée Wars which ranged from 1793 to 1796 - report.

Fifty three members and guests enjoyed lunch together at the restaurant “Le Plantagenet” at the Hostellerie de la Croix Blanche in Fontevraud, Saturday 26thMay. Unusually, on this occasion, we were joined for lunch by the hotel owners, Michel and Mieke Chabenat, and their son and daughter, Sven and Laure. Laure was this year’s winner of the National Public Speaking Competition held here in the Loire Valley - report.

In order to enable the maximum number of international members to attend the celebrations and the ESU annual international council meeting, both were held at the same time as the International Public Speaking Competition, 14 – 18thMay 2018 - report.

We were very lucky with the weather - May Day dawned cold but bright and twenty-nine of us, plus one dog, arrived at the church in Louerre for one of Tony Oakley’s famous walks - report.

There were thirty-five members present at this year’s AGM which took place on the 21 April at the restaurant of the Hôtel du Parc to the north of Saumur. Apologies had been received from a further twenty members - report.

The French final for the ESU Public Speaking Competition was held on the 24th March at the Salons de la Présidence du Conseil Départemental in Angers. A young student from Fontevraud l’Abbaye, Laure Chabenat, will this year represent France in the competition in London in May - report.

The "L’Envol" restaurant at Angers-Loire Airport was filled to the limit on the 17th March when Jean-Claude Guais talked about nuclear energy, addressing both civil and military applications - report.

On the 17th February thirty-six members and friends gathered at the restaurant “Le Petit Blaison” for a meal accompanied by a quiz and our annual photographic competition - report.

Despite Paris being covered with a thick layer of snow, ten members of the ESU Loire Valley branch attended the celebrations which took place in the city from 8th to 10th February 2018 to mark the 30th anniversary of the founding of ESU France and the Centenary of the founding of the ESU - report and from the Dialogue Magazine. There are also photographs taken at the reception at the British Embassy and at the guided tour of Le Palais du Luxembourg , cocktail and dinner at Le Senat.

Thirty-seven members and guests of the ESU Loire Valley arrived at the Cercle de Boule de Fort in the rue des Carabiniers de Monsieur in Saumur at 10.15am. For most of us this was to be an introduction to the traditional Anjou heritage game of Boule de Fort, to be followed by a traditional British Fish'n Chips lunch - report.
