After two days of balmy autumn sun it was disappointing for the 20 participants to wake up to a somewhat damp atmosphere on the morning of 27th October 2017 for our autumn walk together - details.

On Saturday, the 14th October, thirty-three members and their guests met for lunch at L'Astuce Restaurant in Angers. Our speaker was Dr Lucia Dumont Renard, whose talk, 'The Navajo Way to a Successful Education', outlined the development of modern education within the Navajo nation - details

This year's meeting of the International Council was held in Lisbon, starting on Wednesday 27th September. The International Council Meeting took place over two days, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th September - details.

Every two years, the towns of Angers and Saumur organise exhibitions for associations in their municipalities. These exhibitions provide an excellent opportunity for members of the public to discover what is available in the way of societies and clubs in the region. The English Speaking Union Loire Valley joined forces with the Bibliothèque Anglophone from Angers to present a stand at the Forum des Associations 2017 at the exhibition centre at the Parc de Breil in Saumur on Saturday 16th September. Just three weeks later over the weekend of 7th and 8th October, we found ourselves next door to the Library again at the Agora at the Parc d’Expositions in Angers - details.

On the 9th September, forty-two members and friends gathered on a pleasant Saturday afternoon for the annual Treasure Hunt, organised by Terence O’Hara - details.

Sunday, 13th August, sixty five members and guests were welcomed by Julie Dufour and Gilles Gauci to their charming garden for a hog roast. The weather was fine, after some days of rain showers - details.

Word had evidently travelled through the grape vines spreading the news that events at Michael and Irene Small’s charming property are not to be missed. The evening meeting hosted by them 22nd July this year attracted a record number of 66 members and friends - details.

Twenty-five members and friends gathered on the 24thJune at the Domaine de Mestré for lunch and a visit to the Martin de Candre soap factory - details.

Isabelle Hawkridge organised a public speaking competition for young people between the Collège Mona Ouzouf in Savenay and two other local secondary schools, the Collège Antoine de Saint-Exupéry in Savenay and the Collège Paul Gauguin in Cordemais. Patricia Curd was a member of the jury of this competition on Tuesday 20th June 2017 - details.

Sunshine graced the thirtieth anniversary celebration of the ESU in France which was held at the Château d'Angers - details.

The annual ESU International Public Speaking Competition took place in London between 8 and 12 May 2017 - details.

The starting point for the traditional May Day Walk was a car park near the church in the charming village of Le Thoureil. A record number of tenty-four members and friends gathered for the walk, joined this year by Julie’s dog, Izzie, and Terry’s dog, Claire - details.

The Annual General Meeting was held at "le Buisson" restaurant on the 22th April, followed by lunch in the restaurant - details.

The French national final of the ESU Public Speaking Competition took place in Angers last Saturday April 1st from 2 to 5.30 pm. It was organized by The English Speaking Union Loire Valley and its partners, the Bibliothèque Anglophone d’Angers and La Maison de l’Europe Angers & Maine-et-Loire - details. Lucia Dumont, Vice-President of ESU France, has written an article which has been published in the Connexion newspaper. Towards the end of the article is a link to watch the international grand final via livestream from London from 2pm UK time (15h00 here) on the afternoon of Friday 12 May. Thirty Nine ESU members and guests enjoyed a wine-tasting luncheon in the teaching restaurant of the Lycée Sadi Carnot in Saumur on Friday, 17 March 2017.  Cathy Henton of “Le Tasting Room”, was the speaker and our teacher for the day; she is a qualified wine expert with over 25 years in the business - details.

Our day “Out and About in Angers” got off to a bright, sunny start on the morning of Saturday 25th February when thirty members and guests congregated in the car park by the Tourist Office in Angers for the start of our tour of the old city - 21st January 2017 - details.

Thirty six members and friends of the ESU Loire Valley gathered at “La Grange” restaurant to enjoy lunch together, to hear Victor Leray talk about a bird-watching trip to the Arctic and to judge a photographic competition - 21st January 2017 - details.
