Twenty four members and guests gathered in Saumur on 20th
October to have lunch and to listen to Terence O'Hara's talk on the history of Saumur prior to the French revolution. The restaurant l'Aromate provided a convivial if slightly cramped location for the meeting; however, this was more than out-weighed by the quality of the meal and of the succeeding presentation.
The sixth annual treasure hunt started in Doué le Fontaine at 16:00 on Saturday, 22nd
September. The route was planned to explore the coteau du Layon, taking in various historic and prehistoric sites, such as the troglodyte dwellings. Twenty competitors distributed themselves between five cars; unexpectedly, the winner was the car with the smallest crew.....
For a second time this summer, Mike and Irene Small played host to ESU members and guests, who had gathered for the annual summer barbeque. The rain, which had inflicted surrounding areas, held off until late in the afternoon, allowing everyone to enjoy the pleasant surroundings - read more
Anoraks and umbrellas were rule of the day for the group of around forty members and guests who assembled in Saumur for a short cruise, followed by a buffet lunch at the President's home. Read more
Fifty seven members and guests celebrated the Queen's Diamond Jubilee at the home of Irene and Mike Small. Many members wore fifties clothes; the prizes for the best dressed went to Danielle Stzabholtz and Mike Small. More details may be found here

After a wet and stormy April, the skies cleared and the winds eased for the May Day walk. A dozen members, friends and a dog were guided by Tony Oakley on a 7km tour of Rou-Marson.
Thirty three ESU members and guests gathered in la Menitré on the 21st
April, to listen to Mme Patricia Corbett, Director of Chateau d'Angers. Mme Corbett provided a lively and interesting presentation on the Chateau d'Angers, in which she addressed its four and a half millenia history, its relationship to its royal owners, and its famous contents, such as the Apocalypse tapestry. The audience showed its appreciation of her presentation in a lively question and answer session, which had to be cut short to allow lunch to be served.
The French final of the competition "Public Speaking in English" took place at the Lycee Alfred Kastler in Bordeaux on March 22nd
. It is difficult enough to deliver a speech in your own language let alone one in another, however, the three students delivered fine performances and we were overjoyed when Montaine Morice was chosen as the winner. Read more

The Loire valley final of "Debating in English" took place in the salons de la Presidence of the Conseil General du Maine-et-Loire in Angers on the evening of Thursday, 9th
February 2012. Undaunted by their grand surroundings, the judges or their audience, students spoke confidently and clearly and the judges had a difficult task selecting three winners to represent the Loire Valley at the national public speaking finals. Read more

was preceded by an illustrated talk on life in the Antarctic which was given by Peter Morgan. This seasonally appropriate talk was followed by a brief video on current Antarctic activities. Read more
